Tanzanian President His Excellency Dr Jakaya Kikwete has ordered all district authorities to ensure they facilitate the electrification of ward secondary schools, dispensaries and health centres in their respective jurisdictions.
The President directed that both the national grid and solar sources of power should be utilised.
He further ordered district officials to provide electricity and water services to villages, emphasising that the 30 per cent electrification target by 2015 must be reached.
“It’s sad to see our mothers taking along with them lanterns to dispensaries during child delivery. This country is not poor to that extent,” President Kikwete told Coast regional officials.
Ending his official tour of the region on Thursday, where he inaugurated several development projects the President said; “I want you and other leaders to connect all secondary schools, dispensaries and health centres with electricity.”
He noted that the councils can meet the cost for school electrification.
He said each district council could afford paying Sh4 million and Sh12 million for school and health facility respectively.
“You can afford this much, there is no doubt about that,” said Kikwete.
He said the government is well prepared to ensure that the majority are connected with electricity to cope with the rapid changing development trends in the 21st century.
“This programme of connecting people with electricity and water is of its kind that has never happened in the history of Tanzania. By 2005 it was only 10 per cent of the population that was connected, but now it is 21 per cent of the population. Our aim is to connect 30 to 40 per cent by 2015,” insisted Kikwete.
