Tanzania Renewable Energy Association in collaboration with Fransiscan Sisters of Charity of Mbingu, Ifakara ran an educational awareness event in September 16-17, 2013 with the aim of educating and raising awareness of Solar Energy Technology at Mbingu and surrounding areas. This followed a successful installation of a 3.24kW Solar Power System at Catholic Mbingu Health Center with the support of UNDP.

"After this big system was installed at the hospital, we thought there was need for surrounding communities to also become aware of the technology and thought of conducting a big public event for the purpose" said Mother General Sr Eutropia Nduye. "We consulted TAREA for their referencing service when we were looking for a supplier of the solar system. When the idea of a public event at Mbingu came, we also shared it with them and luckily they agreed to offer their full support" she said. Ensol Tanzania Ltd, A Solar PV company based in Dar es salaam was also one of supporters of the event.

The event dubbed " Mbingu Solar Day" attracted scores of people from Mbingu and surrounding areas. Activities that went in line with the event included a visit to a 1.1MW mini hydro power plant, an educational workshop, public showcasing of solar energy products and technologies, community education at the exhibition as part of awareness raising and a football match where two teams competed for a goat.
"The event was a big success" said TAREA Executive Secretary, Eng Mathew Matimbwi. "Actually, we are thinking of carrying out similar events in other parts of rural Tanzania"

Kilombero District Commissioner, Mr Hassan Masala officiated the event.
