Rex Energy, a local solar contractor is targeting to install power to 1.5 million households in rural Tanzania by 2020.

Named 3G Solar Home System (SHS), the technology introduced in partnership with Solaric Pvt Ltd from Bangladesh, will be supplied to off-grid areas and consumers will pay in installments for up to 12 months. According to Rex Energy Managing Director Francis Kibhisa, one panel which will service four bulbs, one TV, a laptop and charge mobile phones is sold for TZS 390,000 but it will cost TZS 410,000 for those who will pay in installments including interest.





"We will be evaluating the abilities of our customers to pay but our services will be available throughout the country and later on to other East African countries" he said.

He said the technology had been tried and tested in Bangladesh, India and Malaysia and he was certain that it was a proved off-grid solution to light up rural Tanzania.
